Editor’s Note: The following is part of our Student Experience Series, where students and alumni share what they learned, how they grew and what made their #SoNYT experience so rewarding.
This weekend millions of people around the world will tune-in as the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots face off at Super Bowl LIII. No matter who you’re rooting for, the story of the game will no doubt boast all the ingredients of a legendary matchup: the glory of winning, the agony of defeat, the heroes, the underdogs, the game-time commentary, the post-game analysis — and let’s not forget the commercials!
Given that Sunday is the biggest day in the sports media world, we wanted to highlight some of our sports-focused courses for . Through a combination of seminars, guest speakers, site visits and sporting events, our sports courses give students the opportunity to learn about different facets of the sports industry from management to media, storytelling, broadcasting, photography, and more.
For students like , a 2018 NYC Summer Academy alumnus who took , our sports courses can expose students to different career opportunities in the industry that they’re passionate about.
“All of my life I have been a diehard sports fan, and in recent years have developed a fascination for the business side of sports as well as how sports media works. I hope to pursue a position in either sports media or management, and I felt that this course would be a great experience on the path to this eventual career, which it was.”
Through our “city as classroom” philosophy, we believe for students to understand a subject they must see how the subject works in real life outside of the classroom. For Fritz, that meant visiting one of his favorite sports media outlets.
“Bleacher Report has been my favorite sports media source for a long time so just getting to see their offices was amazing. Additionally, when we were in the elevator going up to the office I met the host of my favorite football podcast, Adam Lefkoe.”
A key part of all Summer Academy courses is giving students access to some of the world’s best thinkers, writers, and industry professionals. Our faculty are experts in their fields, like Jacob Wolf, ESPN staff writer and 2018 Esports Awards Journalist of the Year, who is teaching the course in 2019.
“In the last five years of being a professional in esports, I’ve seen and covered the rapid evolution of an industry that now brings in near-billion dollar revenues. Driving that industry — both as consumers and those working in it — are young people and in this class, I’m excited to share with students information that will allow them to understand the industry and determine where they may best fit as future professionals. Whether that be journalism, law, marketing, education or even professional play, the opportunities for young people in esports are endless.”
“I’m thrilled to be working with The School of The New York Times to bring an educational experience on esports to the students participating in their Summer Academy 2019 program.” — Jacob Wolf, ESPN, 2018 Esports Awards Journalist of the Year, SoNYT Faculty
